ASSIGNMENT 1

CASE STUDY : SHADING & LIGHTING

The objective of this assignment is to identify passive design strategies for shading and lighting and analyze the effect of thermal comfort or comfort factors in a person and space relating to shading and lighting.

In order to complete this assignment, we had to chose 2 spaces for shading and lighting; moreover, we had to do a thorough research on passive design strategies that perform best in tropical climate and achieve thermal comfort in the chosen space. In addition, we had to analyze the spaces on shading and lighting by collecting the recordings for the temperature and lighting level.

REFLECTION

Throughout this assignment, I was able to recognize the problem of the chosen space which is uncomfortable glare. Not only that, I had learn how passive design strategies can solve the issue of the chosen space by installing a vertical blind in front of the window, which can control the light intensity by adjusting the vertical slats. Moreover, I also learnt that the importance of sun path chart and wind rose diagram to passive design.
